Italy ‘ready to lead’ coalition against jihadists in Libya

Italy said Sunday it was willing to lead an international coalition against jihadists in Libya, as it began repatriating its citizens from the troubled north African country. About 100 Italians were being evacuated from the country on a boat escorted by the Italian navy, foreign ministry sources said. Defence Minister Roberta Pinotti said in an interview published Sunday that Italy was ready to lead a coalition from Europe and north African states to battle against the advance of jihadists in the violence-plagued country. “We have been discussing this for months but now it has become urgent,” Pinotti told Il Messaggero newspaper.

The Italian Defense Minister: US-Turkish plots are jeopardizing European countries’ national security (26 October 2014). The Italian Defense and interior Ministers attended an unofficial parliamentary session and gave briefings about the latest situation concerning US-led campaign against ISIS. Angelino Alfano, The Italian Minister of the Interior, expressed concerns over the news of 480 Italian citizens joining ISIS ranks and considered the religious radicalism as the great source of threat for global security. Alfano underlined the fact that ISIS has the capabilities and potentials which no terrorist group enjoyed until this time and further added that although Italy is not in ISIS’ list of primary targets but Vatican as the cradle of Christianity has been repeatedly threatened by Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the self-proclaimed ISIS Caliph. Roberta Pinotti, the Italian Minister of Defense, stated that ISIS’ threats are very complex and extensive and unfortunately aren’t limited to Syria and Iraq. “We must use every measure to deal with ISIS’ regional sponsors like Saudi Arabia and Turkey, which are providing significant military and financial assistance to the terrorist organizations such as ISIS and al-Nusra Front,” said Pinotti during a closed session of Parliament. The Italian Defense Minister also added that due to close ties between American administration and the Turkish government, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has the temerity to act against his previous obligations to EU and is consistently organizing the Islamist militants in Syria. “I recommend European officials to revise their plans, permitting Turkey to enter EU bloc, because we cannot work with a regime which adopts the State-terrorism policies,” said Pinotti in a committee hearing in Rome. Separately, Federica Mogherini, the Italian Foreign Minister said that Italy became the transit route for African and European hard-line activists who wish to travel to Middle-East, joiningISIS ranks.

The Islamic State fighting to redraw the map of the Middle East represents a “new terrorist threat” not just for Iraq and Syria but also for Europe, Italian Defense Minister Roberta Pinotti said Tuesday. The threat posed by ISIS “clearly extends towards Europe”, said Pinotti, opening an informal meeting of European defense ministers in Milan. Pinotti stressed the need to “use all means available to contain and overcome this threat” and said more cooperation with countries like Turkey was “essential” to achieve this goal.

L’Italia ha detto domenica di essere disposta a guidare una coalizione internazionale contro i jihadisti in Libia, iniziando dal rimpatrio dei suoi cittadini dal travagliato Paese nordafricano. Fonti del ministero degli Esteri hanno detto che circa 100 italiani sono stati evacuati dal Paese su una barca scortata dalla marina militare italiana. Il ministro della Difesa Roberta Pinotti, ha detto in un’intervista pubblicata domenica che l’Italia è pronta a guidare una coalizione dall’Europa e dagli Stati del Nord Africa per combattere contro l’avanzata dei jihadisti nel Paese tormentato. “Abbiamo discusso per mesi, ma ora è diventato urgente”, ha detto Pinotti al quotidiano Il Messaggero.

La difesa italiana e il Ministro dell’Interno hanno partecipato a una sessione parlamentare non ufficiale e informato sulle ultime situazioni relative alla campagna a guida degli Usa contro l’Isis. Angelino Alfano, il ministro italiano dell’Interno, ha espresso preoccupazione per la notizia di 480 cittadini italiani che aderiscono ai ranghi dell’Isis e considerato il radicalismo religioso come grande fonte di minaccia per la sicurezza globale. Alfano ha sottolineato il fatto che l’Isis ha le capacità e le potenzialità che nessun gruppo terroristico ha goduto fino a questo momento e ha inoltre aggiunto che, sebbene l’Italia non sia nella lista degli obiettivi primari dell’Isis, il Vaticano come la culla del cristianesimo, è stato più volte minacciato da Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, l’auto-proclamato Califfo dell’Isis.
Roberta Pinotti, il ministro italiano della Difesa, ha dichiarato che le minacce dell’Isis sono molto complesse ed estese e purtroppo non sono limitate a Siria e Iraq. “Dobbiamo usare tutte le misure per affrontare i sostenitori regionali dell’Isis come l’Arabia Saudita e la Turchia, che stanno fornendo assistenza finanziaria e militare significativa per le organizzazioni terroristiche come l’Isis e al-Nusra”, ha detto Pinotti durante la sessione conclusiva del Parlamento. Il Ministro della Difesa italiano ha anche aggiunto che a causa degli stretti legami tra l’amministrazione americana e il governo turco, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan ha il coraggio di agire contro i suoi precedenti obblighi verso l’Ue ed è costantemente l’organizzatore dei militanti islamici in Siria. “Raccomando ai funzionari europei di rivedere i loro piani, consentendo alla Turchia di entrare nel blocco dell’Ue, perché non possiamo lavorare con un regime che adotta le politiche degli Stati del terrorismo”, ha detto Pinotti in un’audizione a Roma. Separatamente, Federica Mogherini, il ministro degli Esteri italiano, ha detto che l’Italia è diventata la via di transito per gli attivisti africani ed europei della linea dura che desiderano recarsi in Medio-Oriente,per unirsi ai ranghi dell’Isis.

Lo Stato islamico che sta lottando per ridisegnare la mappa del Medio Oriente rappresenta una “nuova minaccia terroristica”, non solo per l’Iraq e la Siria ma anche per l’Europa, ha detto martedì il ministro della Difesa, Roberta Pinotti. La minaccia rappresentata dall’Isis “si estende chiaramente verso l’Europa”, ha sostenuto Pinotti, aprendo una riunione informale dei ministri della Difesa europei a Milano. Pinotti ha sottolineato la necessità di “utilizzare tutti i mezzi disponibili per contenere e superare questa minaccia” e ha detto che più cooperazione con i paesi come la Turchia è “essenziale” per raggiungere questo obiettivo.
