Cairo. Rami Malek ( Rami Sayed Malek ), trentasette anni di dura lotta. Vive con la sua famiglia Copta proveniente da Minia ( Egitto ) , una importante città dell’antico Egitto, legata alla Sacra Famiglia , oggi Cristiano-Copta e Mulsumana. Ha una sorella più grande Jasmine, nata in Egitto ed un fratello gemello, Sami , nato a Los Angeles. Rami si nutre della cultura egiziana della sua famiglia ma anche di quella americana, fondendole dentro di sè e mettendo “ in pace “ le forti contraddizioni . È chiaro che Rami sa che il suo futuro è negli Stati Uniti e non in Egitto , perciò, si “ tuffa “ completamente nel gioco statunitense, sostenuto dalla famiglia che lo capisce, lo lascia libero nelle sue scelte e lo aiuta a crescere. Studia drammaturgia molto seriamente , terminando i suoi studi alla Evansville University in Indiana. Rami è un attore che usa i due fondamentali , ma contraddittori metodi recitativi di Diderot e Stanislavsky , in un “dosaggio” eccellente, come allo stesso modo , dicevo, fonde le contrastanti culture egiziana e statunitense in sè .
È necessario davvero un gran talento per far ciò. Il metodo Diderot, non “accademico” , impone all’attore di prendere le distanze dalle emozioni al contrario del metodo Stanislavsky i. Rami sa perfettamente , quando deve “recitare” e quando non lo deve fare , mai contaminando la sua genuina autenticità. Chi riesce a fare questo , pochissimi ne sono capaci, è già una potenziale star. E una potenziale star la si vede , la si percepisce….ed ecco che Rami, vivendo a Los Angeles, città di cinema, viene notato , aiutato ed incoraggiato da professionisti del settore cinematografico . A tratti, vedendo Rami, ho pensato a Frank Sinatra giovane, nato nell’ East Coast , da emigranti italiani , circa 70 anni prima di Rami , in un periodo storico molto differente , ma vedo in Rami una grinta simile a quella di Frank , un modo di essere simile, un viso magro, asciutto , come quello di Frank giovane che ha forse un modo di recitare più controllato di quello di Rami , ma , di base , non molto differente.
Io, conosco da tempo un parente di Rami, Nabil Youssef, deputy director dell’associazione della stampa estera del Cairo. TramiteNabil, seguo Rami da qualche anno e ci si aspettava che presto il suo talento sarebbe stato riconosciuto mondialmente. Freddy Mercury viene da una famiglia di emigranti come Rami. Il vero nome di Mercury è un nome arabo : Farouk. Farouk Bulsara, nato a Zanzibar ( Tanzania ) da genitori indiani. Rami ha voluto impersonare Freddy in Bohemian Rhapsody anche perché ha sentito Freddy vicino alla sua “ storia “ e culturalmente non distante dal suo Egitto.
Rami ha sentito Freddy umanamente , orgoglioso di interpretare una icona mondiale come Mercury , un “ ragazzo “ “eccezionale” della sua età . I Beatles, David Bowie, Elton John , Jimi Hendrix, Mick Jagger, Mercury , leggende UK , ma Mercury fa concerti con super leggende pop- rock statunitensi come Michael Jackson , conquistando gli Usa. E tra i meriti degli Usa c’è quello di aver dato alla luce , oltre allo stupefacente innovatore Michael Jackson ( African American ) , anche Cher ( Armenian American ) , Tina Turner ( American Swiss ) , Madonna ( American Italian ) , Elvis Presley ( American Scozzese Irlandese ) e così via. Quasi tutti frutto di una fusione culturale. In altri paesi, celebrare qualcuno che viene da una fusione culturale e farne un idolo nel proprio paese , se ci penso, pochi sono i nomi che vengono in mente , a parte Dalida in Egitto. In Italia , l’ esempio quest’anno di Mahamoud, italo-egiziano , vincitore del Festival di San Remo che il prossimo maggio rappresenta l’ Italia all’ Eurovision Song Contest a Tel Aviv.
Ma qui , c’è un immaginabile problema politico : non credo che Israele consenta una vittoria and un artista che ha un padre egiziano, come Mahamoud. Ma Hollywood non ha problemi di questo tipo e così Rami Malek , come giustamente fiero afferma il suo parente Nabil Youssef dal Cairo, è la prima vittoria hollywoodiana dell’ Egitto e di tutto il Middle East. Neppure una global star come Omar Sharif è mai stato premiato a Hollywood e neppure il famoso regista ed autore egiziano Youssef Chahine. Ma una vittoria , in arte , è solo conquistata da un artista e non dal paese dal quale l’artista proviene. L ‘arte è universale e non ha frontiere , ma è un indispensabile veicolo per abbatterle e con l’arte , l’artista Rami in questo caso , lo ha fatto. Senza alcun dubbio Rami Malek che ha ben meritato la sua vittoria a Hollywood , continuerà la sua inarrestabile ascesa , consolidando un bridge culturale importantissimo tra east ed ovest.

And a potential star can be seen, perceived …. and Rami, living in LA, a city of cinema, is noticed, helped and encouraged by film industry professionals. Sometimes, seeing Rami, I thought of Frank Sinatra as a young man, born in the East coast, by Italian emigrants, about 70 years before Rami, in a very different historical period, but I see in Rami a determination similar to that of Frank, a way of being similar, a thin, dry face, like that of a young Frank who has perhaps a more controlled way of acting than Rami’s, but, basically, not very different.
I have long known a relative of Rami, Mr. Nabil Youssef, deputy director of the Cairo foreign press association. Through Mr. Nabil, I follow Rami from some years ago and we all were expected that soon his talent would be recognized worldwide.

But Hollywood has no such problems and so Rami Malek, as his relative Mr. Nabil Youssef from Cairo rightly claims, is the first Hollywood victory of Egypt and the entire Middle East. Not even a global star like Omar Sharif has ever been honored in Hollywood or even the famous Egyptian movie director and author Youssef Chahine. But a victory, in art, is only conquered by an artist and not by the country from which the artist comes. Art is universal and has no frontiers, but it is an indispensable vehicle for breaking its down and with art, the artist Rami in this case, did it. Without a doubt Rami Malek, who well deserved his victory in Hollywood, will continue his unstoppable rise, consolidating a very important cultural bridge at least between east and west.
