I mutamenti del clima sono un’emergenza assoluta da non sottovalutare. La Casa Bianca ha affidato al dottor John P. Holdren, tra i massimi esperti al mondo, il compito di elaborare piani di azione e di rispondere alle domande dei cittadini.
Ecco cosa scrive lo scienziato sul sito della White House.
L’ultima decade è stata la più calda che l’America ricordi. C’è stata siccità, ci sono state inondazioni e incendi. Insomma che il clima stia mutando è sotto gli occhi di tutti. Per poter far fronte a questi cambiamenti dobbiamo capire seriamente qual è il problema. Alcuni mesi fa ho illustrato alla Commissione per le Scienze della Camera il Piano per il Clima del Presidente. Il Piano prevede una serie di azioni per ridurre l’inquinamento, preparare gli Stati Uniti ad affrontare il cambiamento climatico e a dirigere e coordinare le iniziative internazionali per combattere il cambiamento climatico globale.Molti degli interrogativi, che mi sono stati rivolti durante la seduta, non sono stati relativi al piano stesso. Tanti volevano sapere se il cambiamento climatico provocato dall’uomo fosse una realtà. Altri paesi si stanno rendendo conto della gravità di questo problema e stanno adottando misure per farvi fronte.Dallo storico annuncio congiunto sul clima fatto da Stati Uniti e Cina emerge che il peso della leadership americana nella lotta contro i mutamenti meteo non può essere sottovalutata. La maggioranza degli americani, fortunatamente, si sta rendendo conto che i cambiamenti sono reali, ma c’è tanta confusione e disinformazione su questo. Ecco perché è fondamentale cogliere ogni occasione per fare in modo che tutti siano informati e abbiano contezza di ciò che accade. Io voglio fare il possibile per essere d’aiuto. Chiedetemi ciò che volete sui cambiamenti climatici e trasmettete questo messaggio a chiunque voi sapete che abbia domande da fare. Spero di sentirvi presto.

The past decade was America’s hottest on record. We’re seeing more droughts, floods, and wildfires than ever before. Climate change is happening, and the effects are visible all around us.
But a lot of people still have questions about climate change: what it means, how bad it really is, and what we can do to fight it.
To be fully committed in the fight against climate change, we have to understand why it’s such a serious issue.
Several months ago, I testified before the House Science Committee about the President’s Climate Action Plan. The plan contains a number of actions to reduce carbon pollution, prepare the U.S. for the impacts of climate change, and lead international efforts to fight global climate change.
Most of the questions at the hearing, however, weren’t about the plan itself — they were about whether human-caused climate change is a reality.
Other countries are realizing the gravity of this problem, and are already taking action on the issue. In the wake of the historic joint climate announcement by the U.S. and China two nights ago, the importance of American leadership in the fight against climate change cannot be understated.
Fortunately, a majority of Americans believe that climate change is real, but there’s still a lot of confusion and misinformation out there. That’s why it’s critical that we take every opportunity to set the record straight, and to make sure that everyone’s as informed and knowledgeable about it as possible.
