“Egypt has regained very quickly the political and social stability and its economy is growing.” This was underlined in an exclusive interview for FUTURO QUOTIDIANO with  engineer Khaled Abu Bakr, president along with Marcello Sala of Italian Egyptian Business Council and  super manager of Taga Arabia, the largest private company for distribution of energy of Egypt. Khale Abu Bakr ,key man of the economic recovery of the country of Pyramids, November 25, with President Abd al-Fattah al-Sisi,  was on an official visit to Rome, where, with his delegation, met with a group of Italian great entrepreneurs interested to strengthen bilateral relations.

Egyptian President Al Sisi chose Rome as the first stop of his tour in Europe. What is Italy for Egypt’s “new course”?

Major new projects are in the pipeline between the two countries, who are going to strengthen the already strong partnership that exists between them. From the birth of the two republics, the Italian June 2, 1946 and the Egyptian June 18, 1953, Rome and Cairo cooperate in many different fields. But their friendship has ancient roots that go beyond the realms  of Italy and Egypt up to go back to the times of ancient Alexandria and Rome: two thousand years of excellent relations and dialogue, an ongoing dialogue in which I believe strongly and that today has an excellent chance to expand and result in industrial investments, technological development, innovation, import and export. The Economic Partnership Agreement between Italy and Egypt is among the strongest in the Mediterranean area. Italy has a key role as a gateway for my country in the European market.  Italy  is the first destination of Egypt to export  and it is the fourth country to import in Egypt. It is estimated that the commercial exchange reached 4.7billion dollars during 2013 and it increased by 6.5% in the first half of 2014.

During the visit to Rome of al-Sisi were reached strategic agreements for the economy of the two countries?

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi has achieved great success in Rome, earning excellent results in this first phase of the new season of economic relations between Italy and Egypt. Several agreements were signed in the fields of energy, transport, the railways in particular, including high-speed trains and planes, mining, security and border control of the coasts, agriculture, the construction of large infrastructure and real estate development, the expansion of maritime services and products export, training for young people, technicians and craftsmen.

What is the key sector in the cooperation between Egypt and Italy?

Opportunity of primary importance are the energy sector: investments could reach 40 billion euro over the next five years . Many mining activities will intensify in the ‘Golden Triangle’ in southern Egypt, with the creation of a logistics center in Damietta . The development in energy sector  can come by innovative forms and traditional at the same time. Italy is also ready to participate in the project of doubling of the Suez Canal and in the construction of a high speed rail Alexandria-Cairo-Aswan-Luxor. The textile industry and cotton, the tannery and leather industry will be part of the common goals between Italy and Egypt. But this is only the first step. In the spring of 2015 in Sharm El Sheikh will be the second phase of comparison of  the bilateral relations between Italy and Egypt, where the ‘Italian Egyptian Business Council has a very important role.
