Egypt said it found hundreds of new tunnels between Gaza and the Sinai. One of these tunnels contains weapons and is 1700 m long i.e. 8 times longer than St. Peter’s Basilica (211 m). Cairo, which is creating an eight-mile buffer zone, discovered the tunnels using satellite imagery. The Egyptian army plans to uproot 10,000 residents from approximately 800 houses to make way for the buffer zone. The zone’s construction comes in response to a terror attack at an army checkpoint last week in which 31 soldiers were killed. Since the attack, Egypt has implemented a curfew and a three-month state of emergency, and has closed the Gaza border. Eventually the buffer zone will be monitored with surveillance cameras and will feature a water-filled trench along the border to the Mediterranean Sea.
Tunnel business
The cost for the construction of one of these tunnels is 300.000 dollars and its daily income is 200 dollars. One of those tunnels owners said that he does not care about the identity of the person who is using the tunnel. An estimated 7,000 Gazans scratch an insecure living by working in the tunnels, stretching from southern Gaza into Egypt. The network of tunnels, estimates numbering over 500, is an essential prop to Gazan business. Owning a tunnel is a lucrative business – there are believed to be hundreds of “tunnel millionaires” – but building them and working in them is highly dangerous.
Tunnel traffic

Tunnel construction
The tunnels are normally dug by individual contractors from basements of houses or an olive grove under the border at depths of up to 30 meters, and reaching up to 800 meters in length. In many cases, the owners of the houses enter into a business arrangement with the tunnel builders. They may receive a portion of the profits from the smuggling or some other sort of financial compensation from those who contract the tunnel construction. While many tunnels are of a generally high quality of engineering and construction – with some including electricity, ventilation, intercoms, and a rail system – they are still very dangerous and are prone to cave-ins. The openings to many tunnels are found within buildings in or around Gaza’s southernmost city of Rafah.
Hamas: Tunnels builder
In mid-2007, Hamas seized power in the Gaza Strip and with Hamas started this illegal tunnels business. Following the takeover, Egypt and Israel largely sealed their border crossings with Gaza, on the grounds that Fatah had fled and was no longer providing security on the Palestinian side. So Karni and Rafah checkpoints were closed again, resulting in “severe personal and economic hardship for Gaza’s 1,4 million population. In 2009, Egypt began the construction of an underground barrier to block existing tunnels and make new ones harder to dig. In 2011, Egypt relaxed restrictions at its border with the Gaza Strip, allowing Palestinians to cross freely.[2] In 2013–2014, Egypt’s military has destroyed most of the 1,200 smuggling tunnels which were used to smuggle food, weapons and other goods into Gaza.[4]

Yet, we need to exert pressure on it to develop its means. As for the reason why the people of Sinai are paying the price, some of them did not declare their clear rejection of Hamas.” He added, “Everything that is taking place in Sinai is the consequence of Hamas keeping its grip over the Gaza Strip, turning Sinai into a corridor for smuggling and a reservoir to store missiles and weapons. The movement is working to expel the state from Sinai by turning our children into smugglers and terrorists, and using Sinai as a place to keep criminal groups out of Gaza.” If Hamas is ousted, said Abu-Fajr, half of Sinai’s problems will be solved.
Sisi’s compensation
In an attempt to assuage residents’ frustration, President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi ordered local authorities to quickly give compensation to residents who left their homes. “Egypt will never forget its honorable people of Sinai, their well-documented patriotic stances and their sacrifices to the nation,” he said through spokesman Alaa Youssef. retired Gen. Hamas: i costruttori del tunnel
