Many people are sure that the Egyptian security kidnapped, tortured and killed Giulio Regeni. But these are just assumptions. At present, we can only ask questions and wait for the investigations outcome. Certainly it is kind of weird that a country like Egypt that aims to play a major role in the Middle East and North Africa and gain westerns trust, hit such an important partner for Cairo in this way. Basically I can kill my neighbor. But if I am smart enough, I will leave a lot of evidences showing that the doorman is the one who killed him. Then, either the Egptyan security is not as clever… or the policemen are so used to torture dissidents that the situation got out of their hands …or we have to search elsewhere for the killers.
However after the news reported in the New York Times, it is important that Egypt takes responsibility in front of the world. Global rights groups have regularly denounced mysterious disappearances of activists and perhaps the moment has arrived for the President al Sisi to really start a new road for his country, that be more transparent and democratic also on human rights.
